52 in 52

At the beginning of this year I took on the challenge of reading fifty-two books in fifty-two weeks. I didn't commit to the challenge until the end of January when I had already passed my quota for the month... I figured with such a great start I may as well give it a shot.
Every month I made an effort to read at least 5 books, some months I fell short, others I pushed forward.
Come week 47 I met my goal... and kept going.
Here's a list of the books I read this year. The books highlighted in yellow were my favorites and the ones highlighted in blue are notable and definitely recommended. I did not dislike any of the books I read and have something good to say about each one, the highlighted ones just stood out a little bit more than the rest.

**Looks like I made 65 instead of 64... somehow, when putting April and May books together I had forgotten that I had read Bossy Pants. How I forgot about that is beyond me.

While I loved this challenge I think I need time for other things next year. I am going to continue to keep track of the books each month but I am not going to stress about reading 52+. I do have to figure out my next reading goal... maybe a classic a month for 2012, or I can only purchase a book a month... the rest have to come from the library...
I haven't decided quite yet.

What are your reading goals for next year?

Books of November

In case you haven't read or heard... I completed 52 in 52 this month! Well, I completed 52 books in 47 weeks! And I kept going, I mean, how can you not when there are 5 weeks left?

A great book about a hard time and a woman's decision to not suffer through it.

posted about it here

This was the 52nd book. For some reason I thought I had one more to read while I was in this book but I  finished and recounted and found that I had indeed completed my goal... Incredible.
The book definitely bummed me out a bit. Not quite the story I expected but worth reading.

I picked this up thinking it was one big book for a low, low price. Turns out it was two normal young adult books for the price of 7.99, a couple dollars less than they sell the individual books for. Not sure I understand... but I'm glad I picked it up.
I'm really stoked on this series. I didn't know what I was getting into when I picked it up, like I said, but oh goodness... I think I read the second book in a night. It has zombies and vampires and werewolves but it's not Twilight. It's so much more tough than that. I love the main character, though I guess she can get whiny at some points, but she doesn't let it stop her. So good.

And then I got into THIS series. I stayed away from it for a long time, it sounded too much like Lord of the Flies and Battle Royale meeting up for a death match. But so many bloggers were recommending it and the trailer for the movie came out (don't worry, I didn't see it before I read them... actually, I still haven't seen it...) and I had to jump in.
I read them in 4 days. The last one I read Thanksgiving night, I got into bed with the book and didn't get up to brush my teeth until I was done.
I'm impressed. Really impressed with this series. I was able to guess some things that happened but I am going to chalk that up to being really perceptive, no fault of the writer.
If you haven't read them and you like reading, READ THEM. Luckily all of the books are out so you won't be waiting months or years to find out what happened. One good thing about coming into a series late.

I picked this book up because of the cover, the title and my interest in Catholic things. The book was interesting enough to want to read through pretty quickly but not so much that I found any excuse to drop what I was doing to read it (like The Hunger Games).

:)

Total count: 58/52
New goal: 60 in 52... 5 books a month!

What did you read this month?

Books of September

This book was a bit difficult for me seeing as lately I've read really easy to breeze through stuff. The writing was a little harder for me to get caught up in but I kept going. I don't think I'll be reading The Call of the Wild anytime soon I am glad I read it. There were many times I found myself skipping over sailing terminology and once I even tried to look up the anatomy of a sailing ship on google but it was on my phone and didn't find the terms I was looking for so I quickly gave up and stuck with the main idea behind the story.

I loved this book. It was a very fast read about a writer who took on one class for 3 years to keep pushing them on their creative writing skills. He obviously becomes attached to the students and he tries to share their stories through this memoir. Great read.

This is the second (3rd?) memoir of an addict slash writer. While the subject matter was depressing the language kept drawing me back in. I could put down the book and still be relatively happy even though I may have read a really depressing chapter. I have a hard time disconnecting from a feeling in a book usually so that came as a pleasant surprise. I try not to read any addiction stories that aren't also tied to literature and writing because I get so bogged down in the suffering.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Karr writes beautifully and each sentence rolls into the next making the story easy to follow.

see my review here

Great, great, wonderful book. Couldn't put it down.

It is very safe to say I did not really enjoy this book quite as thoroughly as many of my friends have. I'm not sure I understand the thoughts and feelings behind the time period. I also have problems with other writers from this time.
I do have to say though, as I went searching for and image of the same cover as the book I read, I did come across a blog post where a man briefly talks about the book and in reading that short blurb I was able to appreciate the book a little more, if more for the actions than the emotions. See it here.

So there's the list for September. I started and left behind one book, another two I am still with... one fiction and one a workbook that I will be keeping company for the next 12 weeks.
My total now (not counting the partially read books) is

46 out of 52!!! I only have 6 more to go and I still have 3 months.

The best part, this hasn't even felt like work. I've loved this goal/project the whole way through.

What have you been reading?

Books of August

I started this post twice midway through the month without realizing it until about a week ago. This month went by slow and extremely fast at the same time. On one hand it seems like ages ago that I read Long Quiet Highway (the first book from this month) but on the other hand I swear I just paid rent for August a couple of days ago.

Regardless of what my mind feels about August passing, it has gone and done it anyway. Now it's September, back to school time. I am considering taking a couple classes at the community college to quell my longing to be back in a classroom.

All that aside, here are the books I read in August!

I'm going to say I liked this book, because I did, but I'm not going to keep it for my collection. I bought this book around the same time that I bought Through Painted Deserts and I think I assumed they were both about road trips, I mean, the cover even looks like it's about a road trip does it not? But the author comes recommended by Julia Cameron and so I picked it up and read it the end of July and beginning of this month. Mostly this books is about Natalie's relationship with learning Zen teachings and applying it to writing in a way. I found it interesting and informative but not as good as Julia Cameron's Sound of Paper.

This book was quite sad and depressing but definitely beautifully written. One character I liked the most while the others just made me more sad. I thought about watching the movie before I read the book but now I'm not so sure, I try to watch things that have the cliche happy ending and not the beautifully written but not exactly happy ending.

Awesome. Love her, it's no secret what so ever. Love her style, got so many ideas for pieces I need for my closet! Taking it slow though, credit card is locked away.
(I am not counting this book in the 52 in 52 because there isn't THAT much to really read and I would feel like I was cheating.)

Best book of the year. Other books are going to have a hard time getting to this level. I've read some awesome books thus far but this one takes the cake.

Semi predictable but definitely a pleasurable read. While I don't think it's a read again type of book I am inspired to read her other books and some of the scenes still stick out in my mind really well.

Loved the movie and didn't know that this book was what inspired the movie until I found it at the bins! Awesome. Definitely different than the movie, which is good considering I've seen the movie several times. This book definitely told an uplifting tale.

We have 19 weeks left in the year and I have 12 books left to read to meet 52 in 52! Think I can do it? Yes, yes I do!

Jeeze, 19 weeks left in this year. It speeds by faster and faster with each passing year. Cliche I know!

What have you been reading?

Books of July

This month I fell a tad behind on my reading. I'm not quite sure why, maybe I had other projects I was working on. Oh yes, I spent a good deal of time working on a blanket and watching movies so that cut into my reading time. That and I've been connecting with friends and making an effort to get out of the house. So alas, I was behind for the month but definitely not behind for the 52 in 52 project. I'll just have to make it up this month!

Here they are:

I really enjoyed this book. I have Spooked on my bookshelf and I think I will be reading that soon. Her style of writing is easy to get into and stay interested in. I guess the subject matter wasn't boring either. As a person who wanted a public health and human sexuality minor (but didn't wanted to graduate more) this book was right up my alley.

So cute! So so cute. I have to read the two other books in the series now. My friend gave this to me after trying to start it a couple of times. I'm not sure if it was Nicole or Chelsea (sorry ladies) but either way I loved it.

As I've come to the last book I realize this month, though few in books was filled with quality.
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is a book that is going on my Favorites list, no doubt about it. I've had this book on my shelf for a while (along with other great books I am sure) and after watching Food Inc. I finally dived in.
This book is full of devotion to a craft that many of us have long forgotten though it was part of our existence for so long. I'm motivated to eat in season and local and start making my own sauces. I'm excited to really learn about what I am eating AND, truth be told, it made me question my actions with my vegetarianism. Not that I think I made a bad choice, just that, with my beliefs, there may be other things I can do, like if I do go back to eating meat only get it from farms that are local and breed heritage animals. That all is to be discussed (or written) at a different time though.
I recommend this book through and through. Absolutely gorgeous and delightful.

Stats:
34 books out of 52. Still ahead of the goal but can't keep slacking! :)

What did you read in July?

xoxo

EDIT:

I read 4 books this month. I forgot about this book!

I'm always pretty skeptical of a christian awakening story BUT I am into spirituality and road trips and memoirs so I decided to give this book a try. I'm very glad I did. While I won't reread it ever I did get through the story pretty fast and have some lasting images.

So that means I've read 35 out of 52 books and I'm still on track!

Books of June

While there were a couple of things I did not like in the series (all toward the end) I overall found The Dark Tower series very intriguing. I'm not interested in SK's scary stories but this epic was definitely worth the time I spent reading it.

While I don't know what business I would start, I did really enjoy this book and plan on keeping it around for the future when I second guess myself or when I need a little advice. I use books as pep talks I am starting to realize and this one is very positive and inspiring.

I am so very glad I took the time to read Floor Sample a while back before I started The Artist's Way or any other book Julia Cameron wrote. I was very skeptical of the whole thing, I've read methods and such but never really believed in any of them but Julia Cameron has definitely inspired me again and again in her memoir as well as this book. There are short essays and after every short essay is something to try to keep inspired or positive or open up new ideas in your head. I definitely would use these when I was needing a grounding point, when I was a tad anxious or didn't know what to write about.  Highly recommended.

Really funny but not cheesy. Loved this book and I'm thinking of writing my own stories, not to publish necessarily, just to have something to laugh about. A way to process.

Got me excited to see Argentina again. A very fast read. Also made me miss horseback riding.

This book was tough. It wasn't hard to read, the language wasn't out of this world and the ideas weren't uninteresting but for some reason I didn't find myself craving reading time with this one. I finally set myself a page goal for each day so I could finish it before the 1st of July and I'm happy to say that today, June 30th, with about 45 minutes before July, I finished it. Definitely a worthwhile read. Definitely pertains to my concerns about female welfare and hit on some points I have yet to work through with myself. I'm glad I kept with this book. Really glad I didn't put it away for never.

What about you lovelies? What books have you been reading?

I'm at 31 ( and a 1/2) books out of 52! 52 in 52 I'm really working on you! That means I'm about 5 books ahead of schedule! I must, MUST keep this up!

Mid Year Goals

While perusing my bloglovin subscriptions I happened upon this post by this delightful lady* and decided I would follow suit and make a list of my own Mid-Year Goals.

It's quite true, I have forgotten about my New Year's Resolutions and while I have been kind of thinking about my 25 before 26 I haven't been giving it quite the attention it needs. Plus there are other things I have been wanting to make habits of that seem even more important now and so this is a great way to get everything in line and a great new project to stick with after my 8 weeks.

Unless otherwise stated these goals are to be met by January 1st, 2012! :)

My first two very important areas of needed improvement are the two f's, fitness and financials.

1. Pay off credit card by March, 2012.
That means I have 9 months and need to pay roughly $350/month.
2. Read 31 Days to Fix Your Finances PDF and complete all needed steps.
3. Do barre classes (that I already paid for) and 3 other exercise classes.
4. Be able to do 10 pull ups and the splits on both legs with back leg bent up.
5. Take a walk once a week.

The rest of my goals are going to do with the norm, reading, photography, blogging, etc.

6. Have 50 I guess we'll make that 100 (!!!) readers (subscribers) between bloglovin and blogger. I wish I could count others but I don't know how to figure out how all of you lovely people are following otherwise, maybe google reader and such... (OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! Loves, I have already made my goal! I just checked google reader. Have I told you all how much I love you lately? Fantastic. That's going to need a post of its very own!)
7. Continue on the 52 in 52. Yes this is a 25 before 26 goal, just want to keep it fresh in my mind. I have about 27 more books to go, not counting the books of June which I will be posting in the next few days. Just want to complete one more in the next two days!

I think I am going to leave it at that. I am really excited with all of my goals, even the ones that pain me (credit card). What are some of your current, semi long term goals?

xoxo

*p.s. Lauren and her blog are ultra stellar.

The End of an Epic

Well,  I did it.

I, Corey, finished the 7 book, 3,000+ page series known as The Dark Tower series.

Originally this was one of my 25 before 26 but I think in the editing process I put that into the 52 in 52.

So here I am, at the end of this epic and I'm relieved. There are things about the series I loved and there are a couple of things that happened toward the end of the series that I had a hard time with.

Honestly, I think that's all I am going to say on the matter unless I find someone who has gone through them all and would like to discuss opinions.

Final thoughts: worth reading.

April and May Books

Oops, I forgot to put together the April books for a while and when I remembered I was already more than half way through May so I decided to wait and put both together...

The last two months haven't been AS productive reading wise as I would have liked them to be. I did get stuck for a couple of weeks on book V in The Dark Tower series and so that brought down my average a little bit. But after that I raced through book VI and then book VII! I'll probably do a post by itself about The Dark Tower series one of these days so I'll leave the rest of that info for later...

Here are the books of April and May

Inspired me to read and do the exercises in The Sound of Paper. Also inspired me to start my Morning Pages.

Sad but true. Not quite what I thought it would be but still decent none the less.

I picked this up at random and was incredibly inspired spiritually. It's funny how I am most spiritually inspired by Latin works.

Started it, stopped for a bit to read some other books, started again and finally finished the first week of May.

Better than Jenna Jameson's memoir I think. Probably didn't sell as many copies though. I remember Jenna's How To Make Love Like a Porn Star selling so many copies to so many types during my Barnes and Noble days.

Skimmed through really, trying to see if there was more information I haven't learned from other sources. I found a couple of helpful tidbits but don't know if I really want to keep the book.

Read through this in a couple of days. Definitely one of my favorites in the series.

So here we are, end of May, beginning of June and 25 1/2 out of 52. I counted the Suze Orman book as half because I didn't read it cover to cover and it wasn't really something that read like a self help, memoir or fiction book does.

What books have you read (and loved) lately?

xoxo

Books of March

Wow how months fly by so fast. I thought this month was going to end with me only reading one and a half, maaaaybe two books. But I pulled through in the end (again) and added a couple more to the list!

Finished up:
I found it at the bins and just couldn't help buy it even though paperbacks are now $1 instead of fiddy cent... I mean $.50, my bad. I knew it was going to be a fast read. It looked like chick lit and by golly it was a whole lot like the Shopaholic book series (I haven't seen the movie and hear it's nothing like the books so even though I love Amy I'm staying away from it). Should you buy it for more than $1, probably not. Was it worth the $1 I paid, maybe. I did enjoy it  but I could have spent that time reading other books too. Eh.

Started and finished in March:
Stephen King's The Dark Tower Series Book IV
Glorious book. Made me want to cry in some parts because there was a bit of romance. I'm definitely a softy. Seriously though, good good read. Took me forever but I finally finished it half way through March!

Yes this series has come to an end. I was so sad to see it go. Totally bubblegum chick lit at its finest. I read every word! :) Many I love me some Lauren Conrad. P.S. paid about $3 for the book at Urban Outfitter! SCORE!

How Starbucks Saved My Life
This man's story of how he went from hero to 0 and then got offered a job at Starbucks and how it changed his life. I have a lot of friends who have worked for Starbucks in the past and their reviews of the place were no where near as happy and lighthearted but I guess it depends on where you are at in your life... and, I'm a sucker for a happy reawakening story. It was definitely that!

This is a very short book. It's actually a speech (address) that she gave to a graduating class. It was a good read (from the first page to the last) and definitely had a couple of different parts that are really good to remember as I go forward, now and forever. Technically it probably doesn't count by official 52 by 52 rules but I'm counting it anyway. Yeah, how do you like dem apples?!

Official Book Club Selection
Kathy Griffin's memoir is quite funny. I read it in 2 days! I saw this at Goodwill (sorry Kathy, if you're reading this, someone did give it up BUT, good news, I then purchased it and read it) and for some reason couldn't leave it behind. Probably because she's a female comedian and a redhead... best part, I bought the book and the next day I was watching a roast of Joan Rivers and Kathy was hosting it. So then I dove into the book.

This months reading has inspired me to pick up a couple of Ernest Hemingway's books and I want to get a bio or even autobio of Joan Rivers as well as Barbara Walters. More to look for at the Goodwill along with my continuing search for Miles to Go for under $2.

52 in 52 count: 19/52

What have you read this month?

The Books of February

While I didn't read nearly as much this month as last month I did get a few books read. Just today I finished a book I started last night but I think I'm going to count that in March books. I'm sure the suspense is killing you.

Until then, here are the books of February:

Started in January, finished in February:
I loved this book. It was cute and fun and there were sad bits too. I initially almost didn't buy it because it was about a baby but Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird really impressed me so I decided to take my changes. Thank goodness I did! She's becoming one of my favorites for sure.

I started, middled and finished in February:
I have to be honest, I often judge books by their covers. There are so many classics that have such bland covers. I saw this and a Wuthering Heights with an equally impressive cover and finally decided to dig into Jane Eyre. I was planning on reading the book for a while anyway, it just so happened that that specific cover made me want to read it sooner than later. I'm honestly thinking about starting a Jane Eyre collection due to the fact that there are several very pretty covers for this book.
As far as the story went... I enjoyed it immensely. I didn't want to put it down and I didn't ever get bored with the writing. The best part was the day I started reading the first page my sister sent me a message saying she was reading it for her English class. Funny coincidence for sure.

Found this at Goodwill and decided it must be bought. I love Neil Gaiman. I started reading him when I god a book titled Good Omens which he co wrote with Terry Pratchett. One of my all time top favorite books. I'll probably end up doing an all time favorite books here in the next couple of months now that I think of it. Anyway, I recently also read Neil's book American Gods and enjoyed it so my curiosity about Coraline and my love for Neil Gaiman came together and I purchase the book. I read it a couple of nights ago to the sound of rain in a still night. Perfect background really. I really want to see the movie now.

Slowly (to me) but surely I am making my way through this series. The next book will take me and pass me through the middle point! I LOVE these books. I shied away from Steven King for so long because I thought all of his stuff was scary and would give me nightmares (I'm quite prone to them or I was due to having a VERY active imagination). I'm so glad my friend Nick told me about these and I picked them up. I'm attempting to read at least one a month which means I should be done with the series by the end of June. We shall see.
I highly recommend the series. The first half of the first book takes a little time to get into (at least it did for me) but after that they are so hard to put down. Action, suspense, gunslingers, different worlds. Epic trials. So good.

and finally,
the one I started but didn't finish
I wanted to like and be inspired by this book so very badly. I wish I could have found justification to stick with it past the half way point. I was going strong in the beginning getting a third of the way through and some of the things, well, even most of the arguments being made I could relate to or made sense to me. But then it started getting redundant and I really started questioning it and resisting what he was trying to say. It was when he said people shouldn't be held responsible for their actions their pain-body or their ego's should that I really disengaged from the book. I took some positive things away from the beginning but I highly doubt I will take the time to ever fully finish the book. I have promised myself that if the going gets really tough with a book or if I struggle to get through even half of it I can stop reading it and pick up the next book. I feel guilty every time I do this but I just don't have time for things I don't want to read. There are so many things to explore, I don't want to waste my time and get to the end and wonder  why I wasted that much more time on it. If I feel strongly enough that I NEED to read it before I die I will pick it up again.

And here ends The Books of February. It's looking like I'm still on track for the 52 in 52 book challenge!!! This month I just barely made it! Even if I hadn't I did read NINE books last month so I guess I have some wiggle room but still. I didn't want to commit to this challenge but here I am thinking about it all the time all the same!

What books have you been reading? Have you read any listed here?

The Books of January

First full book of the year, technically I was still re-reading The Art of Happiness when the clock struck 12 but I won't count that one. We'll start here with Hector. Delightful book, quick and easy read with a simple style for a not so simple topic. Hector searches for what makes people happy all over the world and writes down lessons. Very charming.

Second book of the year and the one that motivated my choice/decision to go vegan. (resolution #5) It is not an argument for veganism and I do recommend it even if you want to keep eating meat. Honestly it's just asking for people to be aware of the current situation because money and advertising are painting us a pretty (and not so true) picture.

This I didn't technically start in 2011 but I got side tracked with the other books so half of it made an appearance in my reading this month. Such a good storyline, this one pulled me in almost immediately from the beginning. I'm excited for #3 but might make myself wait until February, I have other tasks to cross off my list and other books to read!

FINALLY did the exercises! Phew. Am I any closer to finding out what I should be doing with my life, maybe a tad but I did not have an ahhhh ha feeling when I completed my diagram.

This book is absolutely fabulous. It reminded me of Special Topics in Calamity Physics which is one of my favorite books for sure. It's not exactly like Special Topics, in fact it's only very slightly similar but I was so happy it was because I've been looking for something like it for a while now.

I took this as a fun/ semi serious read but ended up really gaining some quality information from it. A review I read about the book made it seem just as hard as her tv personality but the book is really full of encouragement and maybe it just struck a cord because I feel similarities with her (made out to be a raging witch when really just don't take crap and love to be honest) but I felt way more positive about everything in my life than I have in a long time. I really like Kelly Cutrone and have since I first saw her on The Hills no matter how intense she was made to seem. I honestly can't wait until her second book comes out.

Cute book written about a chance at love on an airplane flight from NY to LA. Yes, if it were a movie it would probably be a rom com. It's from the perspective of a guy though which is a nice twist but I'm still a skeptic. Do guys really fall hard for just one woman?

World War Z held my interest pretty well for a story composed of interviews. Actually, that's probably why it kept my interest so well. I love hearing people's ideas. It gave this broken feel to the story because  nothing was 100% sure, but it was all perspective. I don't know if I missed it but I still want to know HOW they became zombies in this one.

I had started this while watching Season 1 of the tv show but left off a couple episodes before the end. I would watch an episode and then read to that part in the story but the TV show and the book/comic/graphic novel are pretty different so I didn't know where I was leaving off and if I was spoiling things for myself so I stopped reading for a while. Now that the Season 1 was done I decided to finish up. So far I like the book storyline a bit better. I still can't wait for Season 2 though!

I'm really excited about his idea of posting all the books I've read each month. Look forward to it 12 times this year!!! At the rate I'm going I might be able to make the 52 books in 52 weeks after all. In all fairness though I did have a good amount of free time this month.
