Can't Help It

While I tried and tried to resist these short movies I buckled and then caved about 5 minutes ago and watched them. They are gorgeous. My two favorites...

I spotted Buenos Aires in both videos almost immediately and it made my heart hurt a bit. I know I have to put that goal to be there for a month plus back a year or 2... but I miss it. I want to experience it again.

I want to travel so much. I want to travel and try new things and see so many places and live. Just live.

If you were given one free trip where would you go? Would you bother with a return ticket?

Between the Lines: The Hours

As you know, I have been reading quite a few books lately. I've been going for at least 4 a month, hoping for 5 or 6. As I've been reading, I've been highlighting, processing and being inspired or infuriated by sentences, paragraphs and chapters. While reading The Hours, my 36th book this year, I came across a chapter that I really connected with. I decided I wanted to share a part of the chapter with you.

Maybe it will inspire you to read this book, maybe not, but I'm going to try here and there to share parts of my books with you from here on out!

Happy Reading!

"Here is her room, then: a turquoise room, not surprising or unusual in any way, with a turquoise spread on the double bed and a painting (Paris, springtime) in a blond wood frame. The room has a smell, alcohol and pitch pine, bleach, scented soap, all floating heavily over something that is not rancid, not even stale, but not fresh. It is, she thinks, a tired smell. It is the smell of a place that's been used and used.
She goes to the window, parts the filmy white curtains, raises the blinds. There, below, is the V-shaped plaza, with its fountain and struggling rosebushes, its empty stone benches. Again, Laura feels as if she's entered a dream - a dream in which she looks onto this peculiar garden, so uninhabited, at a little past two in the afternoon. She turns from the window. She takes off her shoes. She puts her copy of Mrs. Dalloway on the glass-topped night table, she lies on the bed. The room is full of the particular silence that prevails in hotels, a tended silence, utterly unnatural, layered over a substratum of creaks and gurglings, of wheels on carpet.
She is so far away from her life. It was so easy.
It seems, somehow, that she has left her own world and entered the realm of the book. Nothing, of course, could be further from Mrs. Dolloway's London than this turquoise hotel room, and yet she imagines that Virginia Woolf herself, the drowned woman, the genius, might in death inhabit a place not unlike this one. She laughs, quietly, to herself. Please, God, she says silently, let heaven be something better than a room at the Normandy. Heaven would be better furnished, it would be brighter and grander, but it might in fact contain some measure of this hushed remove, this utter absence inside the continuing world. Having this room to herself seems both prim and whorish. She is safe here. She could do anything she wanted to, anything at all. She is somehow like a newlywed, reclining in her chamber, waiting for... not her husband, or any other man. For someone. Something."

My thoughts on the book as a whole will wait until my Books of August post...

Have you seen the movie? Would you recommend it?

A Super Sunday

Today has been awesome and rad and wonderful all wrapped in one little package.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting a new friend, named Amanda (through my dear friend Chelsea), who sometimes blogs... and loves reading like I do.

I woke up quite late in the afternoon just in time to get ready to get my lazy bum downtown to Powell's (you know, my favoritest and the most dangerous places ever) and I just had to find this one book... which turned into 4... but I guess I don't call it the most dangerous place for nothing.

We then ventured to the Ace Hotel which one of these days I will just have to do a Portland Love post on. There we talked to my dear friend Donovan who I worked with back in the day, I spotted a very attractive boy, Amanda and I took some photobooth pictures, I bought and half way consumed a decaf iced coffee and then we went upstairs at the Ace because that is where the scanner use to be to put the photo strips on the computer.

We tried our best to show the faces that get us all da boyz. Mine, second down, hers, third down.

We get up there and a tattooed youngish man is sitting at the only computer there and so we sit on this comfy wall of sofa and wait. We chat and chat and at one point this woman comes by to sit at a chair that is behind the man at the computer and he tells her she probably shouldn't sit there because earlier someone had peed in it.
It gets better... a little bit later Donovan comes up and tells this guy that he has to get off the computer, shut the window he is on and leave.
I thought maybe the guy had just overstayed his welcome on the only computer. Maybe a guest really needed to send and email and this dude was just taking up too much time but I figured I would ask Donovan about it later.

I decide to write the attractive boy I saw earlier a note so Donovan can give it to him. I sit down and mull over what to write and eventually come up with someone very me like. (I just want to say I once hit on a guy by giving him a note that said "strip jenga?" with yes no or maybe boxes and I think my number. He worked at the grocery store right by my work and so I saw him a lot... He wasn't single but it did make him laugh and I think that's good too... right?)
I didn't offer this boy strip jenga and just for the record I probably wouldn't have gone through with a game of strip jenga with grocery boy until like at least date five. Because I'm a classy lady like that. Thank you very much!

So, wrote note, went downstairs and Amanda's man showed up at that time. Go to Donovan and tell him/give him the note and then ask him to scan the picture strip we took. THEN ask him about the guy he kicked off the computer...

Get this...

Are you sitting down...

I laughed pretty hard at this one...

The guy got kicked off the computer because he was watching porn. When D told him to shut the window there was more than one to close. Porn. In a very public place. He had no wall behind him, no blockers on either side of him. It wasn't a cubicle...
A lightbulb went off in my head after Donovan told me the story. I said "OHHH! So no one peed in that chair up there today then?" Donovan just shook his head and laughed.
So, dude bro was not only blatantly watching porn in a hotel guest sitting area, he had come up with a story to keep that chair unoccupied. Who does that?!?! Besides that dude I mean.

Okay, in all fairness I don't think that came out as funny in words as it was to all of us at the time. But, it was still good.

After that awesomeness I decided I needed food and we went up to 23rd for margaritas and burritos at this place I had just eaten at a couple of weeks back (on a Sunday) called Santa Fe. The place is lucky they have good food because the first time I went there the inside service was poop. The man making my burrito was just not stoked on anything at all and really not wanting to talk to me or take my order. The cocktail waitress however, was super sweet so I guess after the food was decent and the margarita was good going back wasn't totally out of the blue.
This time the service was MUCH better inside and we sat in the bar to get our drinks. I had forgotten my ID but they didn't card me and I exuded an over 21 attitude (or at least I tried) while I was there.
Amanda, while ordering the drinks, said "prime time!" about something being awesome or good and the bartender had a field day.
Expect me to start using that term often.

We then ventured on for a Voodoo Doughnut. We tried the downtown one but upon driving by the line I  decided we were going to the east side location. We get there, go through the line in like 10 minutes (way less than the possible 30 min to an hour wait guaranteed at the downtown location) and then went to meet up with their friend on Belmont. We were right across the street from my old apartments which made me feel nostalgic. I miss living on a street that has cute little shops, bars and restaurants within a stones throw.

Their friend took us to a bar called East Burn which was prime time. No joke, skee ball games downstairs with a rad/weird movie playing on a projector and I think there were some other games there as well. Upstairs there was a restaurant which had paper lining the tables with crayons in shot glasses and THEN outside on the patio there was a line of swing chairs. SWINGS, for chairs! I swooned. I'm easily entertained I guess.

By then Amanda and her Mr. were pretty tired and so I took them back to their car and we parted ways stating we were never going to be friends.

More like we're going to hang out bunches and have a rad time when they move here.

Oh yeah, I met Amanda through Chelsea because Amanda is moving here and Chelsea thought I'd be a good person to introduce her to the city. Yay.

So yes, today was fantastic and I'm sleepy but I'm going to watch an episode or two of Bones and then jump into bed and read as much of The Hours as possible so I can move on to one of the 7 books I've bought in the last week...

I have a problem, I get it.

Portland Love: Robot Piercing and Tattoo

Portland Love is a series in which I take to the streets of Portland, eating at new places, shopping at new shops, smelling old books and doing my best to not get too wet without the use of an umbrella. It's my way of falling in love with this city over and over again while sharing it with you. Enjoy!

Today's place of love and affection: Robot Piercing and Tattoo

Robot Piercing and Tattoo is my favorite piercing place of all time. I've been to a couple in San Diego and I've been to a couple in Portland, and while a couple were definitely good, Robot is great.

First things first, Robot makes you feel comfortable. They answer any questions you have, explain processes really well and support healthy healing habits.
A personal pet peeve (and indicator of a not top notch shop) is when a shop sells H2Ocean products. For those of you not into body mods, H2Ocean is a salt water spray sold by some piercing shops to care for your piercing. The stuff is a gimmick. While you are definitely suppose to soak your piercing in salt water during the first month or so, it is not advised to spray it with cold or even room temperature salt water which is what comes out of this spray can. When you soak a piercing you are suppose to get the water as warm as possible without burning yourself so the skin opens up and the dirt and germs get pulled out. H2Ocean does not do this. When I see a shop selling this I know they are mostly about money and not about giving their customer a great body mod.
end rant

Robot does not sell H2Ocean products and they have all the paperwork stating why it is bad for a piercing.

Other reasons Robot is rad.
Their jewelry collection is awesome, they talk you through the piercing before it, when they do it they also talk you through it. They don't rush you if you feel a little light headed after and just need to sit AND if you go in a couple times and make conversation they remember you when they see you around town.
Plus, if you are really paranoid and think your piercing is infected or pushing out of the skin they look at it for you and tell you what's going on without making you feel dumb.

Last but not least I recently went in for aforementioned paranoia and asked about tattoos. The wonderful lady (who goes by the name of Shauna) I spoke to, who happened to be one of the tattoo artists was so helpful. She gave me a ton of advice on the process for a big piece. So friendly, helpful and full of information. They were closing and I never got the "get out of here" vibe.

So, if you are in Portland and you just need a tattoo or piercing I suggest Robot. I swear by them.

Julie & Julia: A Review and Introspection

Recently I decided to sign up for Netflix for a 30 day trial and while I'm not enjoying the lack of movies I want to see on Instant Watch I am liking some of the movies I am taking in.

Tonight I am watching Julie and Julia. It has been a great, great choice. I almost think I need to purchase it eventually when I need some blogging inspiration. Like I've needed lately.

It's not that I don't love you blog readers, believe me I do, I just don't always love what I write or I feel like I lack ideas. I am so inspired by other blogs but I don't want to copy and I don't always have ideas of my own I fully believe in. That and I take on too many projects and don't finish one at a time.

Maybe it's because I don't have one focus. I don't have one thing that calms me down no matter what. That's why I get so inspired by these movies and all of the memoirs I've been reading lately. (Just for the record I read Julie and Julia a while back. I wish I kept it but will probably buy a cheap copy again.) I can't imagine being so immersed and in love with one thing, maybe besides reading. But even that I take breaks from. I don't spend hours and hours reading each day but I can say I read just about anything in sight. I read cereal boxes (over and over even if I know what they say already), I read shirts, I read bumper stickers, I try to read license plates even if they aren't specialty plates... I read a lot.

But back to the movie.

I loved the movie. I heard reviews where people only liked the Julie part or others only liked the Julia part but I really liked both. I loved the movie. I will rate it 5 out of 5 stars on Netflix when they ask me to.

I mean, it has a lost at sea (the sea of the mind and crappy work) writer who's trying to find somethings to really look forward to each day, she happens to be a redhead, there is delicious food, cute kitchens, awesome typing sounds, wine galore and two stories of triumph. I need movies like this in my life. I need to own this movie for my creative spirit.

There is this one scene that just stuck with me far past any other. It starts with the image above. Julie and husband are about to eat this gorgeous cake and the Mr doesn't even wait for her to cut it right. He cuts a piece off, picks it up with his hand and shoves it toward his face. The scene goes on with the couple getting messier and messier with the cake until Mr. is literally rubbing the cake on and around his mouth. I don't think I could come up with a better image for pure, unadulterated enjoyment of food.
Yes, I have loved food but have I ever loved something so much that I was inspired to rub it on my face? I mean, of course the point was to be silly with the cake and eat it as messy as possible to outdo one another but still. It was perfect.

I want to enjoy my food that much. I want to be able to bathe in the tastes of the food I eat. I want to stop craving the junk that I eat frequently.

I guess this movie fell in line with a few things I've been working on and thinking about lately. My writing, my blog, the food I eat, enjoyment, projects and life.

My last thought before closing this computer down and hoping into bed to get through at least a chapter of The Hours is "never apologize." Julia says this when talking about food imperfections and Elsie said it about blogging in her online course. It's very true. While I feel like I've slacked on my blog and sometimes post three times in a day and other times stay quiet for three days in a row I have to remember that this is for fun. It is a guilt free zone.

What movie and or book has really inspired or struck a chord with the things you've been mulling over lately?
