a little rain never hurt

I don't know about you guys but I am wishing and hoping and whispering to Mother Earth about getting some thunder storms here in San Diego... more specifically Carlsbad. I figure she doesn't read blogs but getting it out into the universe one more time and one more way couldn't hurt. I mean the last time I said I was missing the rain it rained (granted only a tiny bit) the next day.

Crossing my fingers...

My Freshman Year Girl Crush

So, I have these pants... and I love them, they have the sailor button thing going on in the front... very cute look normally... but here's the deal, I either look like a frump wearing them OR I look like Avril Lavigne circa Skater Boi/Complicated era.

I mean seriously, that white tank may as well be a wife beater (horrible name), the bracelet may as well be a spike wristlet and the pants may as well be dickies. I think if my waist were longer I could master the look I tried a different day, but it isn't and so here I am... Avril-ing it up. Yes, I just made her a gerund.

Oh well, my hair looks pretty good (though I could REALLY use a trim, and bangs) and I'm in a good mood for being up since 7 something. Yes, I know, that's when normal people generally wake up... but I'm not normal. Haven't we established that by now. :)

oh pants, why you gotta be so complicaaated?

aaaand I'm out!

Still Searching: The Perfect Purse

I've been hoping and sometimes even searching for the perfect purse for so. long. now. Some might say forever considering I have been a bag lady since I can remember. Seriously, just ask Chelsea what I buy/gravitate to most and she'll tell ya... bags. I'm very picky about my bags though. I've just spent more than an hour searching for what I would consider the perfect purse and while I've found some good options... (anybody want to buy me a thousand dollar purse?!) I still haven't found The One.
It's like looking for a husband, I want the one that's classic and good to me for life. Or at least 7-10 years. (mmm, nerd joke, a nod to scientists saying our brain stops producing those love chemicals after about 7 years.)

Anyyyway, now that I am tired of being disgusted at all the ugly purse options out there I'll share with you my top three at the moment. I'm really hoping for a caramel, honey brown color, two straps, not too big otherwise I'll put anything and everything in it, and a classic style. Oh yes, and it Must, and I mean Must, be able to hold whatever book I am reading at the moment, and a journal. Sheesh, no wonder I carry around a big purse.

Ralph Lauren Newbury Leather Satchel

Marc by Marc Jacobs Francesca
(I know it's not the right color but the shape is pretty great)
Marc by Marc Jacobs Turnlock Shifty
(definitely my favorite, but this color is really hard to find unless someone has $300 to give me so I can buy it off ebay from someone... no, no one? Alright)

So far the last one is probably my favorite. I'll have to see it in person one day to be sure. Oh sigh. Until then it's h&m and forever 21 bags for me.

A fact about me: yellow

I don't know if I'm going to keep this as a feature or not but I was sitting, painting my nails and had a thought I wanted to share. So I searched for a picture and came over here to tell you a little story about me.

I'll start this off with something a tid bit obvious, I'm a redhead, well, not just a redhead, a strawberry blonde. Being strawberry blonde is a blessing and a curse, I have so many reasons for each but let's just focus on the one that has to do with colors and clothes.
As a strawberry blonde I look GREAT, like amazing, (and modest) in some colors. Others, not so much. While some colors make my eyes and hair stand out, others make me look monochromatic, or worse, sickly. Guess what one of those colors is... yup, yellow.

Normally I don't stress too much about colors that don't mesh well with my skin and hair. Light pinks are hit and miss, so are some greens, creams and definitely oranges. Most of these colors I don't even find myself attracted to, maybe besides the creams, but my heart doesn't break when I can't wear them. This USE to be the case with any shade of yellow. Not anymore. Lately I've become obsessed with yellow. The obsession might be sticking because I just can't find a shade that looks good on me and as we all know we want what we can't have. All shades that I have tried thus far make me look washed out (like I need to look like I have any less color in my skin!) and like I need to make my next stop the hospital.

I try and try, still touch yellow things at stores, get jealous over gorgeous outfits on blogs that incorporate a pretty yellow sweater or dress...
I buy yellow accessories that don't sit against my skin. I have a purse that is white and yellow and I just love that thing. It's the closest to yellow I had dared to get.

That is, until today. I, against better judgement and adolescent memories, bought some (cheap) yellow nailpolish. I've been wanting it forever but there were too things holding me back. First, the aformentioned inability to look healthy with yellow against my skin and second, oh second...

So there was this time, way back, I think junior high, maybe a bit before, when I dared tried yellow polish. I was sooo stoked because it was different and sparkly and yellow and happy. I put it on and the next day at school hoped to show it off. You know what the first comment about the color was, "It looks like you peed on your nails."

Really? I look like I peed on my nails?! I'm laughing in my head right now just remembering that comment. I don't even remember who said it or if I was in a bus or on the playground, I just remember being slightly embarrassed but also a little confused as to how my bright sparkly yellow nail color looked like pee.

Looking back I should have told the kid to go to the doctor if his pee was sparkly or that bright. I, being in junior high, was not quick with comebacks, however, and still not ready to be a trendsetter, so I kept my mouth shut and took the sparkly pee off my fingers. And like all things negative in junior high I kept the mental note to never, ever paint my nails yellow again.

...

With that being said, today is a moment in Corey history. Not only am I wearing a pale enhancer against my skin, I'm doing it wondering if anyone else is going to say I look like I peed on my nails!

You know what?! I don't care what anyone says! I love my pee colored nails!

I've found my future pet...

I was talking to a guy recently that owns a salt water aquarium store (or something of the sort) and he mentioned having octopuses in his inventory (that sounds weird when they are live animals to call them inventory... I didn't know what else it would be though).
A lightbulb went off in my head when he said he had some octopuses. I thought.. wow, I thought I wanted a cat but maybe this will be better. Yes expensive, but considering cats can last many many years and have to get all kinds of shots a octopus can be quite a bit cheaper!

I did some research while looking for pictures to share here and found out a lot of good info. A pet octopus would be expensive and quite a bit of work, but he'd be my buddy! Octopuses are very smart and I think it would just be absolutely fascinating to be able to watch one move all around.

Plus, how many people can say they successfully have owned octopuses? Better than importing a monkey that's gonna bite me! (I won't get the blue ring octopus that can kill humans...)

I wanted a cat but then I realized I also want to go to Argentina in the semi near future and then where would that leave my poor kitty? Asking someone to take care of him or her for six months to a year would be crazy talk. Octopuses live only one to two years, some only 6 months... I won't be able to go to Argentina in the next 6 months (unless a money miracle happens haha) and I probably won't make it in the next year (I'm shooting for August 2012). My pet Octopus, Atlas, and I would bond and have a great time, then his time would come and I would morn in Argentina.

Perfect right?

And maybe we could cuddle like this...

then again maybe not but I would buy that print if it were at least a tad less than $150!

What exotic pet would you get if you could?

Etsy Love: Gallivanting Girls

While searching for birthday wishes (a little while back) I stumbled upon this lovely Etsy shop that may just break my bank (if I open my wallet). The shop is Gallivanting Girls and it might as well say "give us all your money" because that's what I feel like doing.

My favorites:

Maybe I'll forget about it all and life will go on as normal. Sigh.

What I Learned Today (a new series)

I've had this series in mind for a while now and because I have had such a great day today I decided I would finally start it. So here goes:

Today I learned why the number 1 is not a prime number.

How/why did I find the answer: Honestly I was searching for a chart of prime numbers (I love odd numbers and ever more so prime numbers) and got a bit miffed when I saw that 1 was not colored as a prime. I was previously mistaken into thinking it was. So I immediately googled it and found my answer.

Here is my take on the information I gathered, read here to see if you agree.

Apparently there are more requirements than I thought for a prime number. I figured since 1 is divisible by itself and 1 (me, myself and I anyone) it would be considered a prime. I found, however, that by definition, a prime number also has to be greater than one. Not only that but it is not a prime number because it is a unit and because the of the way we use primes.

That's a lot, here's more of a breakdown. One is a unit (I still don't fully understand what that means in relation to other numbers so we'll skip.) Here's what I do understand, primes are used as the bases or building blocks of other numbers. We divide bigger numbers by primes to break them down. We break down non primes into primes to find out what they are made of. When we divide a number by 1 we get no new information, we are still with the original number and 1. For example, let's look at the number 24. Now, when we divide it by a prime (let's say 2) we'll get another number out of it, 12. Then we can go on and divide it by the same prime number (2) and we get a 6. Then we divide it again (for this example it looks like we're dividing by the same primes (2) and we get 3. So when we divided by a prime we got another piece of information from 24. The composition in primes of 24 is 2,2,2,3. If we had divided by 1 we would have been left with 24 which would have given us no new info about our dear 24.

That, my friends is all I can explain. Maybe you learned something new after reading this. If my explanation was even more confusing I apologize! Maybe in the near future I'll have one of my math genius friends to teach me about the unit part as I'm too tired to look it up right now.

The day it changed

.

Normally I don't go out and out schooly on here but I rather liked this note I wrote for Facebook so I thought I would share... it's on the announcement of the Astrology sign changes. Read on:

I wonder if conversation about astrology and signs will change once those born in 2009 and beyond get old enough to talk about it. Will there still be the cheesy "what's your sign" pick up line or will it be "do you follow eastern or western astrology?"
Will people still say things like that girl did or will those who use to reduce due to sign no longer be able to because they will have to refer to two different ones? Like someone would have to reduce me to both Aquarius and Pisces if we go by both methods.
Will children born after 2009 understand why their sign and someone else with the same birthday (besides year) is different?
Will adding a 13th sign even if it's just to the Eastern method change how we talk about the 4 classic elements? Where does this one fit in?

I know it doesn't SEEM like it's a bit deal, especially to those who find astrology and horoscopes to be funny and frivolous but anything that people believe in no matter how silly or sane can affect human life and communication as we know it. It may seem weird and hippie dippie or the invention of a quack but it caused a huge amount of response in a very short amount of time. Whether you know what your sign is or not, whether you read your horoscope every day or if someone read it to you one day as a joke it has been a part of your life. The fact that "what's your sign" is a pick up line shows how ingrained astrology and the zodiacs are in our culture. There are plenty of people like me who don't read their horoscope everyday but know their sign and for some reason they can't define know it as a part of who they are, their core being. For me it would be like changing my name (or my hair color for that matter but that's a whole other story) for good. (I have no clue what's going to happen when I go gray... total loss of all composure?) I don't know when I first heard about my sign or that I was a pisces, I don't remember reading my first horoscope or the first time someone said "Oh, you're a pisces, that makes sense." All I know is that my zodic, wrong or right, has become a personal identifier. No joke I had a small anxiety attack when I first read I wouldn't be considered a pisces anymore. Was that a logical reaction? No. But I definitely wasn't alone. Whether the claims made with each astrological sign are true or not they are read in abundance AND they are believed in. Because they are believed in they are given power to shape and change the way we communicate (be it flirting, joking or serious).

I'm wondering if this will blow over and we'll go back to what it was before or if this will in fact change what we use to think we knew. Will I one day read this long after I retire my facebook (believe me I save many things to hardcopy) and remind someone of that one time when scientists (or the government) tried to change our signs, that was funny! Or will we start communicating slightly differently around this subject and forget where or when the change happened?

Here's a cliche for the ending: Only time will tell.

p.s. look at me thinking about the thing I got my degree in. woooooo. not a complete failure after all. ;)

Pintrest Search of the Day

Today (tonight, yesterday night, etc) I've been thinking a lot about books, reading, careers, libraries, librarians, school, education, economy, the future, society as we know it and knowledge. Surprisingly I've been thinking about all of this inside a umbrella topic. While I'm not going into that quite yet (still more research to do) I am going to share with you my newest post series "Pintrest Search of the Day!" The past few days I have thought about things and immediately gone to pintrest to search for images that went along with the idea. One day it was tattoos, the next it was outfits/fashion/style and today, well today it was books/reading. I decided to share my favorite finds with you here. Future Pintrest Search of the Day posts will not be as wordy. I'm really excited! Here it goes!

By the by, the links I've left are to the source linked on the pintrest page. If you would like to look at my pintrest please look Here. Or click on that pretty button I added underneath the About Me section. Oh look at me getting all bloggy and fancy.
